Caring for an aging parent or loved one can feel overwhelming. You’re suddenly faced with hard choices, endless paperwork, and the weight of knowing their comfort and safety is in your hands. Many adult children find themselves asking the same questions:
How do I get help for my aging parent?
How can we afford long-term care?
What’s the right way to talk to my parents about care without hurting their independence?
How do I make their home safe so they can stay there longer?
These questions don’t come with simple answers, and that’s why Elder Path exists — to help you navigate the complicated maze of senior care with compassion, clarity, and hope.
Why This Work Is Personal to Me
This isn’t just business for me. It’s my life’s calling.
On March 8, 2023, I lost my Mama after being her only adult child caregiver. Her best friend, Kathy — who I lovingly call “Mama Kathy” — stood by me through that season. On my Mama’s deathbed, Kathy made me promise to look after her, too.
Not long after, Kathy’s husband, a Vietnam War veteran, passed away after a long illness. She had been his full-time caregiver, and when she went to her local VA branch for help, she was told he didn’t qualify for benefits. I knew that wasn’t right.
I drove to South Carolina to sit with her, assess her home situation, and help her navigate the system. Within a week — even over a holiday weekend — we had hospice in place, the right paperwork filed, and support coming through the door.
A few weeks later, Mama Kathy called me, her voice breaking with tears.
“Tasha, you won’t believe this… I just got a letter and a check. They said I’ll receive this money every month until the day I die.”
That relief meant she could finally pay off her husband’s nursing home bills and stay in the house he had built for them. Her family told me I was able to accomplish more in a week than they — along with friends, church, and even the medical community — had managed in six months.
That’s my “why.” This work is deeply personal, because I’ve lived it.
